Sump pump installation and replacement in Southfield
Updated October 19, 2026 · referral service, not a contractor
A sump pump is the heart of most Southfield waterproofing systems, and it's the part that fails. Pumps last roughly 7 to 10 years, power goes out in the same storms that fill the pit, and many older homes still send the discharge to the floor drain, which backs up when the sewer does. A contractor can replace the pump, add a battery backup, and reroute discharge outside.
Signs the pump needs attention
- It runs constantly in dry weather (stuck float or a bad check valve letting water fall back into the pit).
- It hums but doesn't move water, or trips the breaker.
- Rust, a pit full of silt, or a discharge line that freezes every winter.
- It's the original pump in a house built before 1985.
Battery backup: the Southfield case for it
The storms that saturate the city's clay are the same ones that take power down. On August 11, 2014, four to six inches fell across the region in about four hours, and the June 25–26, 2021 storm brought a FEMA disaster declaration for Oakland and Wayne counties. A battery-backup pump keeps the pit emptying for hours without power; a water-powered backup runs off city water pressure with no battery at all.
Where should the discharge go?
Away from the house, onto ground that slopes away, and never into the sanitary sewer. Many Southfield homes built before the city separated sewers still have footing drains or sumps tied to the sanitary line; during a big storm that connection sends sewage up the floor drain. A contractor can disconnect it and run a proper exterior discharge with a freeze-resistant outlet.
Permits
Sump pump installation is plumbing work in Southfield and needs a plumbing permit, pulled online through the city's BS&A portal. Ask whether the estimate includes the permit and the inspection. Details on the Southfield page.
HomeGuide national averages for sump pump installation run about $650 to $2,000 for a replacement or new pump and more for a new pit; battery backups add several hundred dollars. Not a Southfield quote.
